NYP and CUIMC Conclude Webinar Series for Local Healthcare Providers

As part of the continued effort to connect resources at NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) and Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) with our local medical providers, NYP and CUIMC hosted a six-part Community Physicians Webinar Series in collaboration with the Dominican Medical Association (DMA). The series is not only part of the commitment of CUIMC and NYP to work together with community, but it is also part of a wider collaborative effort to improve overall health outcomes in northern Manhattan.

Under the leadership of Mara Minguez, MD, MSc, Assistant Chief Medical Officer for Community Affairs at NewYork- Presbyterian Hospital and Rafael Lantigua, MD, Associate Dean for Community Service at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the Community Physicians Webinar Series brought innovative medical expertise to local doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals.

Presented in a format for practical application, the webinars covered how to meet ongoing health related needs to prepare for the next wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of six webinars were facilitated covering vital information for those providers on the ground. In addition, participating medical providers, also earned Continuing Medical Education credits to shore their current knowledge base.

The Community Physicians Webinar Series launched on Sunday, August 30th, with a presentation facilitated by Jordan Foster, MD. Titled: Evolving COVID-19 Impact on Patient Care in the Emergency Department. Dr. Foster, Assistant Professor Emergency Medicine and Director of Emergency Department Government and Community Affairs, discussed Emergency Department protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The following month, topics related to mental health and tips for COVID safety in a hospital setting were covered. On Sunday, September 13th, Warren Ng, MD, Medical Director Outpatient Behavioral Health NYPH-CUMC, Director of Clinical Services Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Professor of Psychiatry at CUMC, covered the impact that COVID-19 has had on community mental health.

On Sunday, September 27th, Steven Chang, ANP, MPH, Manager of Strategy Development, Division of Community and Population Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, shared with local medical providers a session titled: Stay COVID Safe: Lessons Learned from a Hospital Setting where best practices of COVID-19 infection prevention and control were discussed.

October was dedicated to discussing COVID in a global context as well as the topic of vaccines and the COVID-19 pandemic. On Sunday, October 11, Ariel Pablos-Méndez, MD, PhD presented an engaging discussion titled “CovID: The Bigger Picture” in which the pandemic was discussed considering the impact that it has had not only in the United States but also abroad.

On Sunday, October 25, Magdalena E. Sobieszczyk, MD, MPH Professor of Medicine Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Attending Physician at NewYork-Presbyterian spoke to attendees on the topic of vaccines and the COVID-19 pandemic. Titled: Update on COVID-19 Vaccines and Immunity, Dr. Sobieszczyk shared experimental and clinical data on COVID-19 models and discussed the primary objectives of vaccines trials.

Finally, topics and best practices for telehealth were covered on Sunday, November 8th by Daniela Diaz, MD, Associate Medical Director, Farrell Community Health Center, Jenna Zitaner, Telehealth Lead, Division of Community & Population Health at NYP, and Stephanie Mehlman, MHA, Senior Project Coordinator, Digital Health at NYP.
